Eight stories of student housing with spectacular open decks, on the edge of the UC Berkeley campus.
New 8-story, 39,000 sf, privately-owned student housing structure sandwiched between existing buildings on busy Bancroft Way, directly across the street from the UC Berkeley campus. The project is five stories of Type III-A over three stories of Type I-A concrete construction, providing 28 apartments and 1st floor retail.
The building has open decks at every other level to capture views of the Cal Campus and East Bay hills. Large cantilever glulam beams were concealed in the wall structure, each one supporting 2 levels of framing. The backspan is supported on a post that accumulates a large tension uplift, resolved into the concrete podium.
