LBNL NERSC Facility Upgrade

Education

Healthcare + Laboratory

Location:

Berkeley

Structural System:

Steel platform located atop drilled piers and grade beams

Our Building 59 National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) facility upgrade for the lab is designed to accommodate - and cool - future generations of high-performance computing systems.

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) is using air-cooled heat exchanger arrays (ACHEs) which utilize ambient air for cooling, optimize the heat exchange process, and operate without water, making them a highly sustainable cooling option for growing AI and computational needs. To support the upgrades, IDA designed a steel platform for the new ACHEs along with a tall acoustical baffling screening wall to minimize their noise. The platform is located atop drilled piers and grade beams on a very steep hillside with new retaining walls.
