New mass timber community center alongside the historic Moss House in Oakland’s iconic public park.

IDA designed this new 12,000 sf community center housing community, wellness, learning, and recreation space in a new state-of-the art facility. The exposed custom steel connections are a key design element created in the collaboration between IDA and LMS Architects.  The lateral system is a hybrid of concrete-filled steel braces and glulam columns, with a knife-plate gusset connection, to simultaneously provide strength and flexibility in an elegant mass timber frame.

The innovative structure with exposed wood, thoughtful detailing, and extensive glazing lets everyone enjoy the trees and landscape outside while gathering inside the beautiful structure.

This project is set up for the addition of a gym and pool, as City funds allow.

IDA worked with the City of Oakland on the design of this $20.8 million project whose design was centered on extensive community input.
