Designated as one of the City of Berkeley’s Care and Shelter facilities, the Live Oak Community Center was upgraded for seismic safety.

The LOCC is a one-story masonry building with wood and steel framed roofs, divided into multiple connected parts, consisting of a theater, classrooms, and a gymnasium. It was constructed in the 1950’s, with a partial retrofit completed in the early 2000’s. IDA designed a seismic upgrade and general building upgrade of the existing facility. The seismic analysis was performed using methodology in ASCE 41. The seismic upgrade consisted of new wood and masonry shear walls, diaphragm strengthening, continuity ties, and foundations.
